SPX 2011 – Recappin’
By Irma on May 10th, 2011Posted In: blog
Let’s see if I can remember everything. It was a bit of a wonderful whirlwind! All I can say was that this year was the year my hard work was really starting to pay off. Proof that build up takes some time, but if you keep at it you will start to see results.
There were a couple of things on my table that I think did it for me this year. The first being my book.
I’ve been so proud of how this book came out. It looks GREAT. The cover is everything I wanted it to be, and the full color pages are beautiful. And this book caught the attention of a LOT of people there. I had several people, who’d never heard of my comic, come to my table and drop the money for the book because they were intrigued by the comic and thought the book was something worth having.
Even a guy from a comic book store picked it up, flipped through it and said that I needed to get a barcode for it because it was something he’d like to see on his shelves. I told him I only had a few copies left and he told me to contact him when I had more (inward squeeeee).
Also, a friend of a well known Swedish webcomicker picked up my book because he was so impressed with it and he was trying to convince this webcomicker to put her comic out in print. So he bought it right then and there.
And, yes, I did end up selling out. YAY for me! BOO for anyone who missed out on buying one. But they will print again, and I’ll write more about that at another time.
Not that I didn’t have my older books on the table too…

But, even though they impressed people in other years, they were no match for the Big Volume.
They sold pretty well this weekend too, and I only have a couple left of each.
But the other big attention-grabber at the table was a life-sized Mick I threw together the day before:

He got some strange looks, some laughs, and a lot of interest. I think his precense was the deciding factor when Marcus Lindmark, who writes for Seriefrämjandet, decided to choose me to interview for his article. THAT, by the way, was super cool! And he’s informed me that the article will probably post sometime this week. I’ll make sure to link to it when it does!
The interesting thing is that no one asked WHY the fish was in a coffee pot. I think I would have…
I had planned to only sell artist’s cards with my books. But one girl returned 3 times to my table only to finally ask for an artist card. She was THRILLED when I sold her one. So much that I decided to just start drawing them up and putting them or sale. There was only one problem: people seemed to think that they were printed and didn’t realize I was sitting there drawing them all day. I guess I should take that as a compliment on my grayscale coloring
I had my watercolors up for sale too, but they didn’t move. I didn’t expect them to. They just looked good on the table

The venue was laid out MUCH better this year. The room I’m always in usually has some sort of exhibit we have to be placed around. But this time all the walls were removed and we had a ton of space.
And even the big room had more space this year, even though I don’t think there were fewer tables.
It was a complete success and a ton of fun. Thank you to all of you who stopped by, bought things or took a bookmark and showed an interest in Imy!
There were fans, who were fans before coming to SPX, come and visit me. And not just my friends, but readers who wanted to stop by and pick up some stuff. That was a first! It was very cool, and one of the most exciting things for me.
There were also a bunch of people who discovered me at SPX in previous years who came back again to buy the latest book.
And, of course, I had the usual support from my friends, because they are awesome.
I also met a few very cool swedish webcomickers who I am aquainted with through a group I made on facebook: Janna Lundholm of Anywayz, Johan Wanloo of Rock Manlyfist , and Jenny Hannula of Åtta Ben Från Underjorden.
And I really hope that all the people who stopped by and learned about Imy“for the first time this weekend, are here reading this now and checking out the site.
Oh, and do you want to see me there?

So it’s official. I will be a part of 2 conventions this year, just like last year, and I’ve already got my tables at BOTH of them!
SPX 2011
The first is coming up VERY soon right here in Stockholm, Sweden. It will be my 3rd year at SPX, and I’m so excited! This year I’m going with my Volume 1, my first REAL book, and I’m very curious to see how it will go.
I will have more information on SPX very soon (where you can find me, etc.), but for now I’ll just give you this:

NYCC 2011
There’s still 6 months to go until this one so I don’t have much info for this right now, except that I HAVE my table! I plan on having Volume 2.0 for this one, but it’s too early to tell anything right now except the dates!
Location: Jacob K. Javits Center
Dates: Friday, Sat & Sun
Website: http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/
I hope to see some of you guys at either of these. I love meeting readers! More information on both coming as soon as I get it!
While I was in San Diego I got together with Tom Racine of Tall Tale Radio and Lucas Turnbloom of Imagine this for a Harry Potter Trivia showdown!
Lucas and I are both big fans, so it was only appropriate. There was no prize, except that the loser would have to buy dinner at In’N'Out Burger. I’m not going to tell you who that was… you’ll have to listen to the showdown to find out for yourself!
Just clickity-click HERE!
Please excuse me for any incoherence, I only just returned yesterday, and the flip of my night and day is a brutal thing to deal with. I don’t think I’ve ever been this tired.
Anyway, a few weeks ago I mentioned I was performing an “experiment” where I was going to figure out if there were, in fact, so called “warm” places on earth. Living in a dreary, arctic realm, you’d understand why I was loathe to believe in such fantasies. So, of course, I had to put the comic to the side and find out for myself. Purely in the name of science, of course.
I found that not only do such places exists, but there even exists such a place where a partly cloudy 55F day (about 13C) is “freezing,” and is referred to with terms such as “winter” and “bad weather.”
This place is called San Diego, and I promise you, it is real. I have pictures!
My “experiment” lasted for two weeks. And, though this was purely for scientific purposes, I decided a little fun wouldn’t hurt either. After being welcomed by a pink sunset over the mountains from the plane…
… I spent the first 4 days exploring this beautiful city…
One of my first stops, since I AM a cartoonist, was the SD Convention Center which hosts the monster San Diego Comic Con every year:
Then I explored the sweet gaslamp quarter with all of its restaurants…
Which was followed by a day at the zoo where I got to see some cuddly favorites…
And then I jumped in the car and drove to Vegas, baby! (which I hear is the official name)…
…where I, quite happily, lost all my money playing craps, and found out you can go ANYWHERE (seriously) with a drink in your hand – a hard habit to break when I went back to the real world.
Once I’d run out of cash, it was back to San Diego and my beach house on Mission Beach!
…where I spent much time riding around on a bike…
…and building sand castles with one of two of the sweetest little girls in San Diego.
There was also a trip to Sea World which involved killer whales who were only named Shamu during a show…
…and where I overcame my fear of anything that exists underwater and TOUCHED A FREGGIN’ STARFISH. (though, this probably won’t change the fact that I jump as high as the moon when something brushes my leg in the ocean).
Last, but most certainly not least, I got to spend time with supercool comic people, like Tom Racine of Tall Tale Radio (on the right), Lucas Turnbloom of Imagine This (on the left), and Justin Thompson of Mythtickle (not pictured.)
Oh, and, OF COURSE, there was endless amounts of excellent Mexican food…
So, in conclusion, warm and sunny places do exist. And I can sit here and believe this even though it is currently SNOWING outside my window back here in Stockholm, because I can still see the prominent freckles on my nose which appear mostly when I’ve had a decent amount of exposure.
And any place where I can wear a miniskirt and a hoodie and call it “winter” is golden in my book.
So now I leave you with one of the greatest sights from my trip. A Pacific Ocean sunset. Sorry, but there is no greater sunset than this. Especially when it turns green right at the very end (no lie).
(comic returning on Monday the 4th of April)
Apparently there are WARM places on this planet. Places without snow and with blue skies. Places where you don’t have to wear a coat or jacket of any kind. I think it’s a lie. But I’m willing to sacrifice a few weeks to scientifically prove this theory. All in the name of science, of course.
While I’m conducting my, eh, “experiments,” Imy will be on vacation. BUT, she promises to be sending you guys postcards! So continue to check back twice a week at usual comic posting times to see where she is next! And on March 31st the regular comics will be running again!
And by THAT point I can tell you whether or not these “warm” places really do exist.
Since Monday’s comic was delayed to Tuesday, Thursday’s is coming Friday
I already mentioned this on a comic post and in twitter and on fb, but I thought I’d write a quick post about it.
Imy has been graciously nominated in the “Best Character” category. It made my day to read the email that notified me about it earlier this week!
What really makes me smile is that when people went to write their nominations and, out of all the comics they read, my comic came to their minds first. Even more so that Imy herself stands out enough as a character on her own that there are people that feel that she is worthy of this category. Especially since I had no idea they were even taking nominations, and I never posted on the site promoting or suggesting it. You guys went and wrote her in as a nomination on your own. That blows me away.
Thank you SO MUCH for those nominations. I can have my ups and downs with the comic, worrying that what I’m aiming for isn’t coming across to you guys, but this really helps my confidence and it’s inspiring.
THANK YOU!
Read all of the nominees here.
Hi everyone! There will be no comic today due to the holiday. The comic will return this Thursday, the 30th of December.
Hope you’re all enjoying your holiday, especially if you’re lucky enough to be on vacation from school or work too!
Today my guest strip/wedding gift for my webcomic sistah Dawn Griffin posted over at her comic Zorphbert and Fred!
I met Dawn at NYCC this past fall and, just like with all the guys I met at NYCC, it was like meeting an old friend. I thinks she’s the only other webcomic chick I’ve really met, and she’s also one of the COOLEST people. It was sad to say goodbye to her because it felt like we didn’t have ENOUGH TIME! Hopefully we can meet up again at NYCC 2011.
Anyway, go check out the guest strip and her comic if you don’t already know it.
