This just reminds me, on the last day of April every year in Sweden we have a bonfires all over the country for Valborg (Walpurgis). I go to a huge one in the center of town every year by the water. It’s so big that everyone standing around it usually has to stand about 25 feet away. Any closer and you can feel your face melting off. One of these years I need to be very American about it and just take a marshmallow on a stick with me and see how close I can get and if it will toast

Inspired by the recent barrage of solar storms that have been hitting this planet. I could say “we’re entering a solar maximum” now, but that probably doesn’t mean much to many people because you’re probably not as big as a geek as I am about these things. Let’s just say that solar activity is UP (it goes through cycles). Last time it was up like this was when I moved here about 9 years ago. I saw some amazing displays of auroras then. But nothing in the past 9 years, until this past year. Since then I’ve seen it several times from flights back to Sweden. And I’m trying to see it fromt eh ground again, but it’s so freggin’ cloudy!

I remember back around 2004 (I THINK), such a huge storm hit the planet and auroras reached so far south that people could see them from every state in the continental US. So it’s possible. And we’re entering a time period where it’s possible again!

Re: Today’s comic…

When I worked as a barista, I always amused myself with the crazy drinks people ordered. Cherry’s order here is very simple compared to some of my regulars. I never had a problem making the crazy drinks. They didn’t take any more effort than the ones on the menu. But I always found it amusing how… em.. attached people were their super special drink combinations. People even had their favorite baristas who they would ask for specifically to make their drinks, or they wouldn’t buy them.

This was 9 years ago now. I wish I would have kept a journal of my experiences as a barista. I know there’s a lot of funny stuff I can’t remember.

We don’t have graham crackers in Sweden (unless we find a place that imports them), and in this case I don’t think digestives are good replacements. A friend suggested trying them with Anna’s gingerbread cookies. I think that sounds like a GREAT idea. New Midsommar tradition maybe?

I keep meaning to add the pronunciation of “Imy” on the front page here, somewhere obvious, and keep putting it off any forgetting. It’s not something I thought about much when I started the comic.

The short story of where “Imy” got her name is that it’s from me. It was my nickname growing up in half of my family. So, since I hardly get called that anymore, I decided to pass that on to my comic character. And I used the pronunciation that my family always used. Didn’t cross my mind that almost who came across the site would call her “Ai-mee.”

Also, I had no idea that this was an actual name. There are SEVERAL “Imy” fans who are also named “Imy,” which I’ve realized from the “Imy” facebook fan page. And THAT, I think, is VERY cool. For those of you who have this name, how do you pronounce it? I’m curious
