I had this exact moment last week when I was talking to an 11 year old that never heard of Depeche Mode.

Ha, I saw Pearl Jam open for Smahing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chillipeppers in 1990(?) – just before 10 came out. Pre-show had never heard of them, but they sure ROCKED.

About 5 years ago, I was in charge of the photo library at the Internet Movie Database, and I had a college intern helping me catalog some photos (mostly identify the celebs in them and code their names into the database). She had a photo she couldn’t ID and called me over. I take a look and say “Oh, that’s Susannah Hoffs.”

    She says “who?”

    “Susannah Hoffs… from The Bangles.”

    “The Bangles?”

    “Yeah… Walk Like an Egyptian…”

She shakes her head. She’s drawing a blank. And I’m thinking “I’m soooo ooold!” I later find out, just about every person in the office over 30 is feeling the same way.

I should have just said “she’s in Austin Powers’s band.”

My aunt once heard two kids in a music shop saying, “Did you know Paul McCartney was in another band before he was in ‘Wings’?”.

    I weep for our generation…
