298 – Phonetic
I keep meaning to add the pronunciation of “Imy” on the front page here, somewhere obvious, and keep putting it off any forgetting. It’s not something I thought about much when I started the comic.
The short story of where “Imy” got her name is that it’s from me. It was my nickname growing up in half of my family. So, since I hardly get called that anymore, I decided to pass that on to my comic character. And I used the pronunciation that my family always used. Didn’t cross my mind that almost who came across the site would call her “Ai-mee.” 🙂
Also, I had no idea that this was an actual name. There are SEVERAL “Imy” fans who are also named “Imy,” which I’ve realized from the “Imy” facebook fan page. And THAT, I think, is VERY cool. For those of you who have this name, how do you pronounce it? I’m curious 🙂

so its long i, not short? thats odd, but I like that better than Aymee.
Oddly enough, “EEEEMEEEEE!” Is what the screams of someone with a face full of hot chai sound like!
The diphthong you want is “ai-mee” in the description, not “ay-mee”
that’s how people would pronounce Amy 🙂
i read the ENTIRETY of your comic in one go last night instead of writing my science paper. best decision EVER
one of the reasons i wait until break or summer vacation to start looking for new comics, I found Wapsi Square when I had to study for two midterms, write a 5 page paper and read a chapter of physics. Lets just say that was also my best decision ever. ^-^
I could totally see that.
I always thought it was “em-mee”. Then again, I’m retarded that way…
LOL! That made me think of The Oneders! 😉
Love it! I like to say I got it right from the start…
Even though I’ve read the proper pronunciation before, somewhere in the nether regions of this site’s “FAQ” page or something, I’ve never quite been able to get it in my head. I want to pronounce it the same way I’d pronounce “Amy”, but with an “I” instead of the “A”. Like the Beatles’ song “I Me Mine”. In fact, if Imy were someone I knew in real life and had a crush on, I’d probably sing “I Me Mine” to her.
With, no doubt, unfortunate consequences.
Wait, is it EEEE MEEE (two sets of long Es) or EYE MEEE? (long “i” and long “e”)?
E + Me.
Ironicly a coworker was just talking about pronunciations of names mere minutes before me reading this. She is from the pacific northwest and thought I said Ashtabula funny. She thought it was Ash Tab Ull A instead of Ash Ta Bew La and suddenly a whole conversation started about different dialects and pronunciations of names and towns. Then I sat down and saw this and laughed a little harder.
I always thought it was AI-mee too… Ah well, her name is EE-mee now.
Not that much of a change, but man is this ever going to take a while to sink into my head. “Ee-mee” not “Ai-mee”, “Ee-mee” not “Ai-mee”…
Okay, so I have be saying it wrong. I pronounce it Ime. Going to have to adjust now. 🙂
You may want to throw your Chai at me! I’ve always said “eye-me” in my head when saying the name! o.O …who knew!
Just like IKEA. I thought you made this clear like 100 comics ago. /jk because until a year or so ago I thought IKEA was pronounced I-kia.
Huh. My friend Imogene pronounces it “Ih’mee” (rhymes with “gimme!”)
My friend pronounces it the same way, which is how I thought this Imy pronounced it. Whoops!
Funny story– I found this comic while googling my friends name (Imy). This was the first result, and I clicked on it. Now I’m hooked! It is one of the best comics I have ever read : )
haha thanks irma! i feel like that was just for me XD i always say eye-me lol
