43 – The Next Idol
I am especially fond of this one. Mainly because it was fun to draw the Bug. But also, because it’s a 100% true story. 😀 (well, except for the Bug. I was driving an ’86 Cutlass Cierra. Oh, an it was, like, 5 years ago, so it wasn’t this particular song).

LOL! I’ve so been there! And I love that song! 😀 And I love YOU!
I’d just like to point out that the truck driver in the third panel has leaned so far over to his left that it is nearly physically impossible for him to still be touching the steering wheel, and certainly physically impossible for him to be focusing on the road. This, kids, is a lesson in what you should NOT do.
Anyway, this was a really hilarious strip, Irma. I can definitely relate to this — I get so embarrassed when I get funny looks if I’m singing along under my breath to a song playing on my portable CD player.*
*Yeah, that’s right, a portable CD player. So what if I don’t have an iPod yet? Personally I think it’s gotten to the point where the portable CD player is not out-of-fashion old, but “retro.” But maybe that’s just me.
Regards from Jersey,
PTAoA
This strip is AWESOME! I love Imy’s expression in the first panel… and I love her license plate!
Yep. Except we’re the people that like to tell other people they’re rockin out. We don’t yell at them though, we just say it to other people, we don’t yell at ’em though.
People need to rock out in cars, its like the 2nd shower… singing.. place… 😀
Leslie: Haha! Love ya too Leslie! MISS YOU!
PTAoA: LOL! Oh no! I never thought that people would think it was the driver! He’s actually a passenger! Maybe when I get home from work tonight I should change his other arm so that the hand is resting on the door while leaning out so it doesn’t look like he’s reaching for the steering wheel. On second thought, maybe it’s actually funnier that the driver is leaning over that far… hmmm… I’ll have to contemplate this…
And I admire your retro-portable-CD-playerness. I do love my Ipod, since I can carry a large portion of my CD collection in my pocket. But, like I said, my CDs are a collection. I adore them, but I feel like I neglect them sometimes because of my iPod!
And… hold up… you’re from Jersey too?! How did I not know this??
Amanda: Haha thanks! Yes, I thought the license plate would be a nice touch. Especially if anyone mispronounced her name up to now, they won’t anymore! The truck driver’s license plate said “BOSS.” But turns out it didn’t fit into the frame.
tbowl: You’re totally right! People NEED it. There is nothing like driving along and singing my heart out!
Awesome Beetle! I love the license plate. 🙂 Somehow I feel like this has actually happened…
That happened to me on a road trip to Florida.
I’ve been caught singing. I find if you just sing twice as loud when caught you keep your respect
Great strip. Two notable brags here, Irma…I used to own a Beetle. ANNNND I met Nickelback.
PTAoA: HEY!!! How do you know he wasn’t a passenger?
Oh…i just read Irma’s response. YEAH, what she said. LOL
I definitely still use CD’s for all kinds of things. (Like erm, whenever you need to turn something up loud, forget mp3s unless they’re 320’s.)
But I got my Inno. *snuggles his inno*
How funny! Cute comic strip. How do you make it?
I sang to the whole school this way yesterday!
Oh wait, no I didn’t. Frodo just thought I was.
We were driving up to the school and I was singing and had the windows down and he started hollering at me to stop because I was embarrassing him in front of the whole school. HA! I pointed out that there was no one else around, but “if you want me to sing in front of the whole school and embarrass you I can!” Muwhaha!
Irma, this is one of my favorite strips you’ve ever done. Very funny and very relatable. I bet a lot of people have been in this situation.
And I also used to own a Beetle. Drove that sucker from 1992-1997. Good times. More or less.
Huh, great again! Like all the others, I love the license plate. I also like Imy’s expression in the first and last frame. You did a great job ;P
Daniel: Hmm.. maybe becasue you were sitting right next to me at the time? 😉
Heather: Heh! Were you driving from Texas? If so then I hope you were singing a country western song… I hear singing the wrong song through Alabama can get you shot! 😉
Madscott: Interesting.. I’ll make sure to try that next time 😀
Wit: You’re so lucky! Was it an old one? What color? I think they’re so cute and always wanted one. I really like the new ones too. And when and how did you meet Nickelback?
tbowl: I never heard of an inno. But I’m going to use my deduction skillz and guess it’s an MP3 player 😉
George: Thanks! I draw everything in Illustrator and do all the coloring and shading in Photoshop.
Leslie: Hahaha! Poor Frodo! I can totally see you doing it too 🙂
Scott: Wow THANKS! You too? What is this- everyone’s owned one but me? ARGH! 😉 What color?
Katherine: Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Irma – it was a beige 1968 Beetle (automatic stick shift – the worst of both worlds – I loved that car though)
Great toon. That happened to me once. Except I was singing Countdown to Extinction by Megadeth. Or, was it the Final Countdown by Winger? Ah well, it was embarrassing either way!
I saw Nickelback a few years ago before their first album came out. They were on tour with Sevendust and before the show they were handing out demo CDs to people for free. Pretty cool.
Sorry! Final Countdown by Europe!! Oops!!
Oh dear lord! I didn’t notice that she’s driving on the wrong side of the road!! 😉
LMAO Lucas! Yes EUROPE! Don’t tell a girl who’s living in SWEDEN that “Winger” did “Final Countdown!” My goodness. Good thing no Swede’s heard you. It’s like their national anthem.
Also, you made my hubby very jealous with the Nickelback story.
She’s not on the wrong side! Look again! In panel 2, she’s driving towards us. That would be the correct side 🙂 (Unless you’re in the UK… or Japan… etc…)
I had a new model. 2000. It was great. But I have to admit, they’re not as good on gas as one would think.
I would think Wit’s actual meeting of the band would have made your husband jealous.
I briefly encountered them when they were still pretty much unheard of. They were on tour with their second album and the song “Leader of Men” hadn’t really taken off yet.
Europe — Yeah, that was a BIG flub on my part! To mix Winger with Europe is a BAD thing. Even back in the day!
It’s the Finalllllll Countdownnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!
Oh…he’s supposed to be the PASSENGER? That would make more sense…but it adds an extra dimension of funny for me to have him seem to be the driver leaning way over there. Of course, the strip is really funny on its own.
And I can definitely see the appeal of iPods, but for me there’s something special about actually physically having an album, with an actual CD that you can pop into you computer or boombox or portable CD player, and with an insert that has album-related art and often lyrics in it. And then there’s the loudness factor — nothing like just blasting music.
She drives a Volkswagen? I didn’t think Imy was the kind of girl to get easily BUGGED!
that is a super nice car, I wish when I was able to draw that my cars looked so nice!
thank you , now i know a new song ^_^ <3
